I usually get similar questions from clients, like "what should they wear?" or "how should I fix their hair?" so I thought I'd share some images that might be helpful in these areas, as well as others. I'm a visual person so it's much easier for me to understand when I "see" what someone is talking about, for example....
I like for client's children to be dressed in clothes that compliment each other...not something that say distracts from the overall image, like this does:
too much pattern, for sure.
Remember to blend siblings clothing...."not matchy matchy"
Remember, your child doesn't always have to be looking straight at the camera for a great portrait.
Sometimes, an image says so much more when it's shot with the subject looking at something else:
Hair styles are also something I'm asked about. Natural is always best. Now is not the time to style their hair in some manner they have never worn before or will wear again...like these, for instance:
I like ribbons and bows but just remember that less is always more.
*Note the make up on this next one as well.....Natural, again, is always best!
I think Edward Scissorhands got a hold of this guy :)
Hairstyles as well as outfits should blend....again, not be "matchy matchy"

I try to make my clients feel as relaxed as possible....this makes for natural poses...nothing forced or un-natural looking.
Oh, WAIT......that one got in there by accident...... where was I????
I like to incorporate each clients personality into their session by using items that represent what they are into at this particular stage in their life. . . they key is to make it look as natural as possible.

I encourage pets to be included in some shots, as they are part of the family as well.
Here, too, natural interaction between all in the shot is key!

Darn it! I don't how that happened again....sorry.
I typically don't do shots of children in their Halloween costume. I don't know why either. I mean they usually turn out sooo cute!
with Family shots, it is very important to get everyone together, interacting naturally, and not leave any member out...(notice the sweet red headed child is separated from the others)
I hope these tips have been helpful. Please, if you have any questions about these or anything I didn;t address, just let me know!
That's the notes for now!
